Our Mission
The mission of the Red Sox Foundation is to improve the health, educational and recreational opportunities for children in New England, as well as addressing social issues that affect the quality of life in urban neighborhoods.
Background
A registered 501(c) 3 charity, the Foundation was founded in 2002, immediately after the group led by Principal Owner, John Henry, Chairman Tom Werner and the team's partners bought the fabled franchise. The new Red Sox owners, partners and CEO/President Larry Lucchino quickly helped fund the newly created Red Sox Foundation by generously pledging to donate more than $17 million over 10 years.
Although a relatively new player on Boston's philanthropic scene, the Red Sox Foundation has donated more than $5 million to hundreds of accredited non-profit groups throughout New England. These donations are in addition to the thousands of in-kind donations, including authentic autographed items, which the Red Sox provide to help local charities in their fundraising efforts.
Through the efforts of the team's fans and corporate sponsors, the resources and impact of The Red Sox Foundation are already making a difference in our community. This year Red Sox players raised funds for the Foundation through the team's first "Welcome Home Luncheon." They and their wives also generously hosted a variety of fundraisers for the Foundation on Fenway's beautiful field. In addition, the Red Sox Hall of Fame Induction Dinner and other special events help raise funds for the Foundation. Red Sox fans can also contribute by placing birthday and anniversary wishes on the scoreboard during games at Fenway Park.
Our Beneficiaries
The Red Sox Foundation has been the primary funding source for some of the team's marquee community outreach efforts including The Jimmy Fund, the Red Sox Scholars, and the club's youth Athletic Programs (Rookie League, RBI League, and Sox Children's Retreats).
The Foundation also recently established a partnership with the Dimock Health and Community Center in Roxbury to support this extraordinary non-profit's efforts to open the doors of opportunity to children in Boston's most disadvantaged neighborhoods. After the Foundation made a donation at the start of 2004, Dimock's director, Jackie Jenkins-Scott, the President of Dimock, said the Foundation "literally saved Dimock's teen center."
The Red Sox Foundation also focuses on children who live in New England's group homes, or what were once known as orphanages. This outreach, made at the suggestion of Principal Owner John Henry, brought attention, warmth, and financial help to children in need of all three as they have been taken from their parents because of abuse or neglect. The children have come to Fenway Park for games as guests of the Red Sox Foundation and we have visited and made a donation to each group home.
